My approach
“Only when compassion is present will people allow themselves to see the truth.”
—Gabor Maté
I provide a compassionate presence to hear your experience of challenge and triumph. Your story is unique and wonderful, and I consider it an honor to be present and engaged as you share it.
I welcome and have experience serving a variety of individuals, including those who identify as LGBTQ+ and as members of various ethnic and cultural groups, as well as first- and second-generation immigrants. I also recognize that as a white, cisgender, hetero male, my life experience may be quite different from yours. If you would like to seek a counselor who more closely aligns with your identity, please click here for additional resources.
I approach mental health and substance use disorder treatment from biological, psychological and social perspectives, helping you uncover the issues that are interfering with your emotional and mental well-being. This means that I seek to understand the individual in context, which provides information about internal distresses, as well as those coming from family, work, society, and elsewhere.
My goal is to help clients achieve liberation from the effects of trauma and systemic oppression. Due to these challenges, people I work with may struggle with addiction, relationship problems, anxiety, depression, identity confusion, and an array of other issues. With a foundation of warmth and compassion, I help guide you in discovering your own inner resources and gaining new understanding. I listen, I ask questions, and I provide feedback as I accompany you on your journey of change.
To do this, I draw from a variety of disciplines, including:
Eye Movement Desensitizatin & Reprocessing (EMDR)
Mindfulness-based approaches
Existential-humanistic therapy
Person-centered / Rogerian therapy
Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)
Motivational interviewing
Multicultural counseling
Social justice framework
